The number of reviews from companies pan India has swelled in the past few weeks. Thanks to the efforts put in my by my colleague Manish. As I was going through the content posted on the site, irrespective of designations, size of company, industries and other factors, one opinion which has stood out and kind of uniform is “sycophancy”
If there are sycophants in your workplace, or you are yourself one
this article is for you. To tide over the tribe of sycophants, keep the following in mind and practice.
- Do not let any action of theirs, demotivate you from doing your own work sincerely
- Keep documenting your efforts, suggestions and volume of work and use it when necessary
- Confront publicly the individual (chances are the individual will back out or shy away from responding in public scenarios).
Sycophants beware, you are up against some serious workers and you are not doing much by demotivating others and disrupting their performance. Because eventually success comes to a team, group and not to individuals. Try to fit in a group and say positive things about others and make work the mantra and not individuals.
And yes it is quite clear that sycophancy may help you bring closer to small victories but the long term goals will always take a long time to achieve, when you are set up against smart workers, honesty and integrity.
This I have experienced and many of you would agree that, a positive work atmosphere and sincere efforts hardly goes unnoticed.
Now smile and get back to work.

In my last job, problem of sycophancy cost me my job of 11 years . ..employer used to encourage all of them to target independent,’mind-your-work’ type guys and brand them dis-loyal- - -loyalty was marked and propagated as the greatest of virtues for increments and promotions. The more a sycophant slander about his colleague, the more will be his closeness to the management! The worse competition among employees was to be branded as the the most loyal in this area. It was really a dangerous game.
One of such loyalists was caught by me doing a financial mischief in 2006 but he took revenge upon me by reporting that the mischief was with my(his boss) knowledge, and management believed him and I lost my job along with him and still police and court is after me too, like they are after him.Top NBFC with 1000 branches in the country is a real dirty hole of a sort!
